Bachelor of Science in Health Informatics and Information Management

Course Rationale
The program is designed for those who have some technical or clinical knowledge in a health care environment and are ready to move to increased levels of expertise and knowledge in the health informatics field.

Why study the programme
To train and develop health records and information professionals with ability to offer quality health care which is geared towards better management of health care services.

Target Groups
Better management of data, improvement.  To keep at pace with rapidly changing technological advances in health care. Dissemination of information in intra institutions nationally and globally

Programme Objectives

  1. To equip students with analytical, critical thinking and problem solving skills in Health information management
  2. To equip students with both theoretical and practical knowledge and skills pertaining to information and records management
  3. To produce graduates who can apply effectively and efficiently the acquired knowledge, skills and abilities for the benefit of humanity
  4. To prepare students for progression to higher level of studies in their fields of specialization  
  5. To be able to pass on the acquired knowledge to others
  6. To develop basic skills in administration and supervision of staff in health care setting.

Entry Requirements
A) Direct Entry

  1. Applicants must have attained a KCSE mean grade of C+ or its equivalent and above with a combination of English or Kiswahili – C+ (Plus), Biology / Biological Sciences – C +, Mathematics – C +                OR
  2. A level or equivalent with a minimum of two principal pass in Biology and a subsidiary pass in Mathematics or Physics .             OR
  3. Diploma in Health Records and Information Technology  plus mean grade of C (plain) in KCSE or relevant health related courses from an institution recognized by the university senate.

B) Entry via University Bridging

  1. A holder of KCSE certificate or equivalent with a minimum of C+ and lacking clusters subjects, Biology, Mathematics and Physics as in (i) above.  The Candidate must score at least a C minus in the subject he/she is bridging as offered by Mount Kenya University.
  2. A holder of KACE certificate or equivalent with minimum of two principals and lacking O level clusters subject grades .The candidate must score in the subject in which he/she is bridging as offered by Mount Kenya University.

C) Entry via Pre-university Programme

  1. Diploma graduates in related field from a recognized institution
  2. A holder of KCSE certificate or equivalent with a mean aggregate of C (plain) and C (plain) in Biology, physics and Mathematics i.e. 6 months.

Exemptions and credit transfers

  1. A maximum of 15 units can be transferred for relevant units covered at degree or diploma level whose attainment is grade B and above.
  2. Evidence supporting the application should include certified academic transcripts, certificates and a letter from the relevant registrar or authority
  3. Application for credit transfer will not be allowed three (3) weeks after the start of the semester / trimester unless granted permission by the University Senate.
  4. The University reserves the right to administer an appropriate test, through the relevant Department in order to determine whether exemption should be granted.

a)    Exemption
The following conditions should be met in seeking an exemption for a particular subject:

  1. The applicant shall pay a non-refundable credit transfer/exemption fee as determined by the School Board and approved by the Senate.
  2. A formal application on a prescribed form should be lodged with the Dean of School.
  3. The application should include justification and documentary support for the exemption to be considered.
  4. The applicant must have passed the final examinations for the year in which the subject to be exempted was examined.
  5. The School Board may require the applicant to sit an exemption examination.

No exemption shall be granted for professional or clinical subjects.
