Varsity donates Ksh500,000 towards Turkana Cultural Festival

As part of its corporate social responsibility, Mount Kenya University has donated Ksh500,000 towards the 2015 Turkana County Tourism and Cultural Festival.

Lodwar Campus director Felix Sialo handed over the cheque to Turkana County governor H.E Josphat Nanok at his office in Lodwar town recently.

“You are a valued partner and look forward to working with you in future,” said H.E Nanok.

The Festival, now in its second year, will be held at the Ekalees Centre, Lodwar, between August 27 and 30. “The first day of the festival is dedicated to prayers for our region and the neighbourhood, country and other counties. The other days will be used to showcase culture, tourism, education as well as excursions through the beautiful sites and Lake Turkana,” said H.E Nanok.

Mount Kenya University is the first university to establish a Campus in Lodwar. Recently, the Campus moved into a newly-constructed building along the Lodwar-Kitale road. “We are committed to providing quality higher education to every community in Kenya and beyond,” says MKU Chairman Dr. Simon Gicharu. The new Campus building was constructed at a cost of Ksh200 million.

During the festival, MKU Lodwar Campus students will perform some of their award winning dances. The theme of the two-day event is Turkana Cultural Revival for Peace and Development.

In October last year, the university organized an international water summit along the shores of Lake Turkana. Under the theme ‘Water for Socio-Economic Development’, the summit, which was opened by H.E Mwai Kibaki, Kenya’s third President and patron of the Millenium Water Alliance, underlined the university’s commitment to generating new knowledge that is beneficial to this host community.

Turkana Festival will bring together people from South Sudan, Ethiopia and Uganda.
