VARSITY PARTNERS WITH COUNTY GOVERNMENT TO PROVIDE TRAINING

Members of the Kiambu County Government will undertake professional courses at Mount Kenya University (MKU). The courses, which will commence in a month’s time, will be tailormade to suit the professional requirements of the officials. This will enhance service delivery as
well as enable the County achieve its development goals.
“This training has been long over due,” said the Kiambu County speaker Mr Gathii Irungu when he led a delegation of Members of the County Assembly in a courtesy call to MKU officials at Thika Main Campus today. “These courses will help us improve service delivery to our people.”
The courses which are on governance and ethics, devolution, security, food security, management and social welfare will be conducted by the Institute of Capacity Building (ICB). ICB is sponsored by Mount Kenya University.
MKU Vice Chancellor Prof. Stanley Waudo says this initiative has an overall benefit to the community in Kiambu County. One month ago, MKU and the County Government of Kiambu opened a Ksh300 million funeral home in Thika town, built under public-private partnership.
“This was just a first step in a more enhanced working relationship with the County,” he said. The University has a harmonious working relationship with the County government and has sponsored several community projects under its Corporate Social Responsibility policy.
Dr Jane Njuru, the Director of ICB said the Institute provides a platform for endless learning for those who wish to advance their careers. “We are ready to walk with the Counties to ensure they achieve they development goals by equipping the workforce with requisite professional skills,” she said.
Besides training, MKU will partner with the Kiambu County government in providing information technology infrastructure, development of sporting facilities and production of County communication materials. The communication materials will be packaged and produced by the MKU School of Journalism. Kiambu County is unique in that it hosts several universities. Besides MKU, others are Kenyatta University, St Pauls University, St Lucie Kiriri, and Umma University. The County officials said they chose MKU because of its variety of courses, professional reputation and accessibility.
Prof Waudo called on the County government to expand the infrastructure in Thika town, which will ease the persistent traffic congestion.
MKU will hold a mid-year Graduation ceremony on July 25.
