Master of Science in Bioethics and Post Graduate Diploma in Bioethics Programmes

There is need to have a framework for moral reasoning amidst the rising advancement and increase in usage of research and technology in the human population. It is essential to consolidate insights from various disciplines to bear on the complex interaction of human life, science, religion, environment and technology. Decisions involving bio-ethical issues are encountered every day in diverse situations such as the relationship between patients and their physicians, morality in professional practice, social science dilemmas, allocation of scarce resources, complex questions that surround the beginning and end of a human life and the conduct of life sciences research amongst others. The Master of Science in Bioethics and the Postgraduate Diploma in Bioethics programmes are aimed at producing Bioethics scientists capable of addressing the above issues and other emerging societal issues.

Key aims of the programmes are to:

  1. Develop and expand opportunities for individuals wishing to continue their education in the bioethics disciplines.
  2. Prepare students academically and professionally for a career in bioethics
  3. Produce high quality graduates capable of critical analysis, problem-solving, research and life-long learning in biological and medical research.
  4. Empower graduates of bioethics to provide community service through consultation, advice, training, participation, moral and resource mobilization to support the community.
  5. Train manpower that is adaptable to emerging and re-emerging bioethics challenges.
  6. Enhance appropriate management and use of natural, human, financial, logistical supplies, technological and cyber resources, policy, and the medical humanities for the good of the human population and health.

Admission Requirements of the Programmes

Master of Science in Bioethics

  1. Holders of an Upper Second Class Honours Bachelor’s degree of Mount Kenya University or an equivalent qualification from a University recognized by Mount Kenya University Senate.
  2. Holders of a Bachelor’s degree from Mount Kenya University of Lower Second Class or an equivalent qualification from a University recognized by Mount Kenya University Senate. In addition, the candidate must have at least two years of documented relevant work and/or research experience.
  3. Holders of a Bachelors Pass degree of Mount Kenya University or an equivalent qualification from a University recognized by Mount Kenya University Senate plus a relevant postgraduate diploma from an institution recognized by Mount Kenya University Senate, with at least five years of documented relevant work/research experience.

Mode of study: Regular and weekend

Course duration: Four semesters

Fees: KShs 90,000 per semester

Post graduate Diploma in Bioethics

Holders of a Bachelor’s degree in any field or its Equivalent from Mount Kenya University or a university recognized by Mount Kenya University Senate and the Commission of University Education (CUE).

Holders of any advanced higher Diploma or its Equivalent from Mount Kenya University or a university recognized by Mount Kenya University Senate and the Commission of University Education (CUE).

Mode of study: Regular and weekend

Course duration: Three semesters

Fees: KShs 50,000 per semester
