Preliminaries

 Hamjambo!

On behalf of Mount Kenya University, It is with great pleasure and honour to warmly welcome you all as we celebrate the auspicious Parkland Law Campus Alumni Luncheon, themed ‘The Journey Beyond the Alma Mater”.

A day like today is exclusive and very important for us, as it provides MKU the opportunity to engage with Mount Kenya University (MKU) law graduates after a long time as well as provides them a chance to interact. It also enables the alumni the opportunity to venture into existing higher academic opportunities to advance their skills and knowledge on the legal discourse-back to Alma Mater!

Chief Guest and partners in the legal arena, MKU is a Chartered University committed to offering holistic education. The University continues to promote access to higher education by establishing Campuses and Open, Distance and e-Learning (ODeL) Centres in different geographical areas in East Africa and beyond.  I am proud that today our Centre of Excellence Parklands Law Campus is hosting this event. It also prides me to see most of our alumni attending this event.  MKU praises the multiple roles played by the alumni in the society. Many of you hold the key positions of major influence in society and widening scope beyond the legal fraternity. We appreciate your efforts being made for the development of our society and justifying the years spent by you at this esteemed institution. Finally yet importantly, I would like to thank MKU fraternity for your keen participation as well as the support you have always extended towards our alma mater.

Chief Guest, Ladies and Gentlemen,

MKU takes cognizant that our young people must be empowered with skills and resources geared to shifting their mindsets from job seekers to job creators. Determined to fill in the glaring void that exists in the current legal market, the University satisfied the Council for Legal Education requirements on accreditation of programs offering legal education in the country by presenting a curriculum that addresses the challenges that the modern legal professional is facing. Through its practice-driven learning approach, the program seeks to enhance legal and national development through the training of all-rounded legal professionals.

The University has invested significantly on distance and electronic learning and we have quite a number of our programmes being offered and examined online.  I am happy that today we are launching distance and electronic learning for Master of Laws and indeed this will be very convenient to many postgraduate students in the legal profession.  As a University, it is our resolve, and commitment to offer the following benefits for our Alumni students;

  1. Masters of Law Progamme at a discounted rate for the Alumni Students.
  2. Expanding the Alumni into an Association for a wider professional network.
  3. Offer online Educational Resources.
  4. Mentorship Opportunities.
  5. Access to Exclusive Events and Opportunities sponsored by MKU.
  6. Publication of the School of Law Journal.

Finally, I reiterate the commitment of the University to make a strong contribution to supporting innovators and leverage on technology in the development of legal knowledge.

Chief Guest, Ladies and Gentlemen

It is now my honor to invite Dr. Vincent Gaitho, Pro-Chancellor and Vice-Chairman of Council, Mount Kenya University to make his remarks.

THANK YOU AND MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL

Prof. Deogratius JAGANYI

VICE-CHANCELLOR
