Experience on Erasmus+ KA171 Student Learning Mobility at University of Cyril and Methodius in Trnava

Prepared by Ngotho Kinyua, PhD student, Department of Social and Development Studies, School of Social Sciences, Mount Kenya University

From September 16 to December 21, 2024, I had the privilege of participating in the Erasmus+ KA171 Student Learning Mobility program at the University of Cyril and Methodius in Trnava, Slovakia. This remarkable opportunity has been a transformative experience, contributing significantly to my academic and professional journey as a PhD student in Development Studies at Mount Kenya University.

Academic Engagement and Growth
During my time at UCM, I actively participated in various academic activities that enriched my scholarly experience. Attending PhD seminars provided a dynamic environment for exchanging ideas and methodologies with fellow doctoral candidates from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds. These sessions were instrumental in refining my research approach and expanding my academic horizons.

A highlight of my stay was delivering a lecture to master’s students on the topic of colonization and post-colonial Kenya. This lecture not only allowed me to share my knowledge and research but also provided a platform to engage with postgraduate students, fostering a vibrant academic dialogue.

Networking and Collaboration
My experience was further enhanced through participation in four international researchers’ networking events organized by EURAXESS in Košice, Žilina, Nitra, and Banská Bystrica. These events were invaluable for building connections with researchers across Europe and beyond. The networking opportunities have opened doors for potential collaborations, which I am excited to pursue in the future.

Cultural Immersion and Social Engagement
Beyond academics, my involvement in events organized by the Erasmus Students Network (ESN) offered a rich cultural immersion experience. These activities allowed me to appreciate the diverse European cultures and fostered meaningful social interactions. The teamwork and cultural exchanges during these events have greatly enhanced my interpersonal skills and global perspective.

Reflections and Gratitude
This mobility program has significantly influenced my academic perspective, broadened my research network, and equipped me with innovative methodologies and cultural insights. I am deeply grateful to the Erasmus+ Student Learning Mobility program, Mount Kenya University, and the University of Cyril and Methodius in Trnava for providing this invaluable opportunity. The experience will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on my PhD research and future career in development studies.
