Mount Kenya University (MKU) students and staff recently brought the spirit of the season to Upendo Children’s Home in Murang’a by sharing a meal and donating essential items.
During the event, MKU donated foodstuffs, cereals, toiletries, and metal storage boxes to support the children in their dormitories. This initiative was part of the university’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, demonstrating MKU’s ongoing commitment to making a positive impact in the community. Through its CSR activities, MKU has consistently supported various initiatives across its campuses and ODEL Centres nationwide.
Speaking at the event, MKU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi emphasized the university’s dedication to giving back to society, “Mount Kenya University appreciates the unwavering support from the community in enabling our students to learn peacefully, access internships, and secure jobs after graduation. As a token of our gratitude, we extend Christmas warmth and wishes to you all.”
Upendo Children’s Home is currently home to over 60 children, ranging from five-year-old to high school students. The home provides a safe haven for vulnerable and neglected children referred by government social work services. Originally established in Juja by Eunice a generous Sunday School teacher, the home relocated to Murang’a in 2018 . It now operates as an integrated facility, complete with a farm and livestock to help sustain its operations.
The home’s manager, Madam Josephine Wambugu, expressed her gratitude to MKU, she said “We deeply appreciate your visit and the support you’ve shown. We encourage you to visit often—our doors are always open. We look forward to more collaborations with the university, including opportunities for your students to engage in internships, volunteering, and mentorship programs for the children.”
Upendo Children’s Home supports three beneficiaries currently in college, 20 in high school, and 30 in primary school. Its operations depend largely on contributions from well-wishers and the surrounding community.
MKU remains committed to fostering community development and making a difference in the lives of those in need.
