Mount Kenya University Vice-Chancellor , Prof. Jaganyi yesterday handed over KSH 7 Million tablets in a joint collaboration with KNATCOM-UNESCO and National Research Fund. The tablets will be used by the convicted capital offenders pursuing high school education while serving their terms at six selected subjects as part of their rehabilitation.

The customized internet free tablets are pre-loaded with the Biology, Physics and Chemistry lab high school syllabus as well as a virtual lab for each of the three subjects that allows the students to take virtual lab experiments in their holding blocks.

CDMA disabled tablets will rely on an independent network providing gadget known as Signal technology to access learning content that has been stored in the cloud for transfer  to the tablets, upon demand .The tablets have being donated under the  “The Effectiveness of Offline Study Desk on Prison Education” project which is funded by National Research Fund.  The donations where received by Commissioner General of Prisons Service, Mr.  Wycliffe Ogallo, yesterday (16/08/2021) at an event held in Nairobi and also attended by dean, school of education, Mount Kenya University, Dr. Benson Njoroge and Prof. Peter Wanderi , Principal Corporate Services.

The tablets contain interactive STEM subjects’ material and Science Virtual labs for use in training inmates in the six (6) maximum prisons in Kenya. In addition, the tablets will be used for an offline teaching where the inmate-students will access learning materials in an internet free environment technology via Mr.Signal technology. This is a fast and revolutionary in the use of ICT in Prison education. The project is using education to reduce recidivism and empower the inmates.
