
Student Training for Entrepreneurial Promotion – Sustainability (STEP-S) project has kicked off the year by conducting the 3rd Train-the-Trainer workshop at the University of Venda (South Africa). STEP-S project is a 4-year (2024-2027) collaborative project between Mount Kenya University (Kenya), University of Venda (South Africa), Godfrey Okoye University (Nigeria) and Leuphana University (Germany). The project is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The objective of the project is promote entrepreneurship among undergraduate, postgraduate and secondary school students in order to bridge unemployment challenges through self-employment.

The project coordinators from Mount Kenya University, Godfrey Okoye University and Leuphana University gathered at the University of Venda for a 5-day Train-the-Trainer workshop. During the workshop, 12 trainers (ToTs) were trained to become certified STEP-S trainers who will be tasked with the responsibility of training the postgraduate students on entrepreneurship.
To date, Mount Kenya University has attained the following milestones; already trained 12 STEP-S trainers (ToTs), conducted postgraduate research workshop attended by all partner institutions and trained 200 undergraduate students (Thika campus) on entrepreneurship and the seed capital was provided to enable trainees practice business within campus.
In addition, Mount Kenya University will host the second Train-the-Trainer workshop in March 2025 during which addition 12 trainers will be trained who will then train further 200 undergraduate student teachers on entrepreneurship. The partner universities have gotten the opportunity to learn best practices from each other as well as engage in South-South collaborations.
