Mount Kenya University (MKU) School of Law, a global hub of excellence in legal training seeks to contribute to the training of competent lawyers equipped with the necessary legal skills and knowledge of both national and international laws with a focus on international and development law.

Mount Kenya University (MKU) Parklands Law Campus was established in September 2009 following approval by Commission for Higher Education, (CHE) now the Commission for University Education (CUE) and fully accredited by the Council of Legal Education (CLE) to offer the following programmes:

The LL.M programme is accredited by the Council of Legal Education. Qualified candidates are invited to apply our intakes are in January,May and September.

 Areas of Specialization

Law graduates are well suited for specific legal careers and studying a law degree does not limit one to roles specifically in this field. Like other social science subjects, the academic challenges provided by law degrees can be good preparation for a broad range of different career paths. Other sectors one might consider as a law graduate include politics, policy development, government, business and management, accountancy, banking, commerce, finance, government, HR and recruitment, journalism, marketing and PR, media, teaching, the civil service and not-for-profit/NGOs.

The Programme is tailored to meet diverse market needs both nationally and internationally. The areas of specialization are:

  1. International Business and Investment Law. This focuses on the legal regulation of business transactions, foreign and domestic investments. A graduate of the programme would be able to understand the structure of international business and investments law and the legal environment in which it operates.

Graduates of this programme will be able to practice and work in international commercial negotiations, investment and portfolio regulation, investment start-ups and offshoring and commercial law generally.

  • International Human Rights and Democracy

Graduates shall acquire knowledge in the interaction between democracy and human rights as well as the different ways through which international law impacts on local democratic and human rights processes (and vice versa). With the world facing a dual crisis of democracy and human rights, graduates of this programme will be able to work and practice in the area of human rights, electoral law and constitutional law. The case teaching method will particularly equip the students with analytical and practical skills necessary for legal practice and work in a multiplicity of sectors including NGOs, government, Multinational and regional organizations.

(c) International Development Law

This specialisation seeks to enable the candidate, understand the interaction between law and development including the extent to which different systems of regulatory governance and administration impact on development both domestically and internationally. It therefore enables the student to understand the interaction between global and national legal processes and their implication on development. In this era of globalization, graduates of this programme will be highly sought in academia, think tanks, multinational organizations, county and national government. Legal practitioners who deal with human rights and governance will equally find the course to be very   necessary in their legal toolbox.

International Energy Law

Energy has become the engine of development across the world. With the increasing discovery of energy across the continent, and the merging discourse on the question of renewable energy, experts in energy law have become some of the most sought-after professionals in the legal field. This course will equip the student with knowledge and skills on the international and domestic legal regulation of energy investments, regulation of energy production, energy contracting and sub-contracting oil and gas law as well as energy trading. Due to the interaction between international environmental law and energy exploration and transportation, the course will embrace both a domestic and international approach in analysing the legal complexities in energy sector.  Graduates of this sector are highly sought by carbon-trading negotiators, energy regulators and energy corporations. The increasing disputes between various energy players also makes the course very appealing to practitioners in this area.

Intellectual Property and ICT Law;

The next arena of legal battle is the area of intellectual property. By merging both intellectual property law and ICT, the course is structured to make the student appreciate the close interaction between intellectual property and ICT in the 21st Century. The course is therefore tailored to enable the student apply intellectual property rights in the development and innovation in the ICT sector. Furthermore the course will enable the student understand the dynamics of internet regulation, and its implication on intellectual property and cybercrime both domestically and internationally.

Graduates of this programme will find employment spaces in ICT sector players, Internet solution companies, publishing sectors and various internet, intellectual property regulators both domestically and internationally.

Admission requirements for Master of Laws:

The following shall be eligible for admission into Master of Laws degree programme:-

  1. A holder of a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree with a minimum of a Second-Class Honours (Upper Division) from a recognized University: provided that the applicant satisfies the minimum requirement for admission to an undergraduate degree programme in Law; or
  2. A holder of a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree of a Second-Class Lower Division from a recognized University with a minimum of a three-year working experience provided that the applicant satisfied the minimum requirement for admission to an undergraduate degree programme in Law.

DURATION

The programme shall take four (4) academic semesters over a period of 2 years. Students shall be expected to pick one of the areas of specialization.  Students shall undertake 10 units over this period. Those specializing in energy law will be expected to take 11 Units. In addition, the student shall write a thesis and publish two articles in peer-reviewed journals.

TUITION FEES

Ksh. 250,000 per semester In addition, Ksh.12,000 statutory fees is payable in the 1st Semester of every calendar year.

MKU Pay As You Learn(PAYL) Fee payment plan

This is an innovative fee payment plan designed by the MKU Finance Directorate for practicing , salaried students or students engaged in business activities who receive a monthly income. The fee payment allows the students to pay their fees on an agreed monthly instalment.

The Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree prepares undergraduate students for careers in legal education in both private and public sectors.

Course structure and Duration

The program is offered to both government-sponsored (KUCCPS) and self-sponsored students over a period of at least nine semesters, inclusive of 1 semester for judicial attachment.

LLB is offered in both full time and part-time basis. The part-time schedule programme is more accessible to and accommodative of the special needs of those in full time employment

Admission Requirements

In order to qualify for admission, a student must satisfy any of the following minimum requirements:

  1. at least a mean grade of C+ in K.C.S.E with B plain in either English or Kiswahili; or
  2.  at least three principal passes at Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education Examination; or
  3. a degree from recognized University; or
  4. A credit pass in Diploma in Law Examination from accredited Institution.

TUITION FEES

Ksh. 85,000 per semester; In addition, Ksh.12,000 statutory fees is payable in the 1st Semester of every calendar year.

The Diploma in Laws programme is meant to meet the current needs for paralegals with broad-based knowledge, skills and abilities. The programme incorporates specific tailor-made units that are designed to equip the students with practical skills necessary for paralegal duties. By the end of the course, the student will be equipped to work in governmental and non-governmental organizations as investigating officers, court clerks, legal assistants, and case-management officers.

Course structure and duration

6 semesters inclusive of 1 semester of judicial attachment.

Admission Requirements

In order to qualify for admission, a student must satisfy any of the following minimum requirements:

  1. At least mean grade of C plain in K.C.S.E plus C+ in either Kiswahili; or
  2. At least one principal pass at Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education Examination; or
  3. A pass in certificate of Law offered at an accredited legal training provider; or
  4.  A certificate of experiential legal learning issued by Council of Legal Education.

TUITION FEES

Kshs. 54,000/= per semester. In addition, Ksh.12,000 statutory fees is payable in the 1st Trimester for every calendar year
