Mount Kenya University (MKU) has conducted a transformative e-commerce training program for business owners in Thika. This initiative, aimed at equipping small-scale traders with essential digital skills, sought to enhance their capacity to promote their businesses, increase sales, and broaden their market reach.
The comprehensive project began with a review to identify the extent to which small-scale traders were utilizing digital tools for their businesses. These traders were then invited to a fully sponsored two-day face to face training session at the Mwai Kibaki Convention Centre.
During the sessions, participants were trained in various aspects of e-commerce, including:
- Digital Marketing
- Content Marketing
- Email and Video Marketing
- Social Media Marketing
Dr. Mercyline Kamande, the program’s lead investigator, shared the program’s vision: “Our goal is to empower traders to leverage their smartphones and affordable internet access to maximize the benefits of e-commerce. With the skills and knowledge we’ve shared, we are confident they will see a significant boost in their business performance.”
The training was a collaborative effort led by faculty members from the School of Business and Economics, the Department of Journalism, and the School of Computing and Informatics.
Following the training, participants will advance to the second phase, where the MKU team will provide hands-on support, monitor their business operations, and offer tailored guidance. Traders will also have access to retraining sessions based on their needs and will be awarded certificates upon completion.
The Traders E-Commerce Training Program is funded through the Vice-Chancellor’s Research Grant, secured by Dr. Mercyline Kamande and Dr. Maria Mungara, esteemed lecturers in the Department of Economics.
“This program goes beyond just training; it’s about transforming lives and businesses. By equipping traders with practical e-commerce skills, we are opening doors to endless opportunities in the digital marketplace. Our aim is to see these traders thrive and set an example for others in their communities.” Dr. Maria
This initiative is part of MKU’s broader commitment to empowering communities by equipping individuals with skills to improve their livelihoods, grow their businesses, and create more employment opportunities.
