Producing competitive graduates through industry stakeholder engagements and curricula revision

Unemployment remains a political and economic challenge in the 21st century. Annual unemployment rate as of 2018 in Kenya is placed at 7.4% (KNBS, 2018). Skills mismatch has received and continues to receive renewed attention as the “major constraint” in both advanced and developing economies (ILO, 2014). Unemployment in Kenya is attributed to under-education and over-education among university graduates who lack the practical skills required by the labour market (FKE, 2018; ILO, 2017; Handel et al., 2017; British Council, 2017; & CUE, 2016). Since 2017.

There have been ongoing initiatives by DAAD and GOK to adopt the German Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) model of training at both Tertiary institutions and HEI’s. Following the lessons learned from the Germany Model of Universities of Applied Science (UAS), MKU, School of Business and Economics, through its Dean, Dr. Henry Yatich, sought collaboration with SWISSCONTACT Kenya to review the Bachelor of Commerce Curriculum, with a special specialization option 3rd year level of study for Microfinance training.

There has been tremendous growth of the  Micro Finance Sector (MFS)  in Kenya since the Microfinance Act 2006 was enacted. Since 2009-2019, Kenya has 13 MF-Registered institutions with more than 114 branches and over 4000 employees-Source: CBK, 2018. This shows that MFS is and remains a potential employer and consumer of university graduates-Notwithstanding the SACCOs, Banks and other MSEs offering financial services. As such, there is need to develop a tailor-made programme that meets the labour market expectation and considers employer’s, and industry concerns.

As a pilot project, the review of the Bachelor of Commerce Curriculum Commenced in early 2019 with support from SWISSCONTACT-Kenya and the need to address “skill mismatch”.  Through a series of consultation, an MOU was signed between MKU and SWISSCONTACT in June 2019 to enable the curriculum review to commence.

The review adopted the DACUM-1976 approach where  Brainstorming and Idea Generation is carried out with selected focus group-This took place in July 2018 (involving 24 microfinances representatives) and was carried out by SWISSCONTACT-Kenya with representatives from industry

The Second step has been accomplished by the CDT team, through an MOU and have held numerous consultative meetings to incorporate the recommended skill/knowledge areas in the curriculum- Step 2:  Grouping Content into Groups/Units. A validation workshop was done with 12 industry stakeholders on 22nd October, 2019 at Main Campus Thika. The school anticipates to complete the programme process and have a special launch in November, 2019, to pave way for its roll-out in January, 2020.

Considering that this is the first-time such an approach has been put into practice, we believe the university will have a competitive edge since, the programme is unique in its kind and will be offered only at Mount Kenya University as part of the need to avoid duplication of programmes in Higher Institutions of Learning (HEI’s) in Kenya.
