Mount Kenya University has launched a new course; Dyslexia Certificate, in line with its unwavering commitment to inclusivity and diversity. The Dyslexia certificate course will be offered by Centre for Professional Development (CPD).

Dyslexia is a common learning difficulty that affects approximately 15% of students in any given classroom. It is characterized by challenges in reading, writing, spelling, and short-term memory processing. Despite its prevalence, many teachers lack the training to identify and support learners with dyslexia. As a result, these learners are often misunderstood and misrepresented, which can hinder their academic progress and overall well-being.

In line with Mount Kenya University’s unwavering commitment to inclusivity and diversity, we are delighted to announce a new partnership with Dyslexia Organisation, Kenya (DOK). This collaboration aims to address the critical need for greater awareness and understanding of dyslexia within the educational system. Together, we are launching a comprehensive 3-month certificate course designed to empower educators, parents, and other interested professionals with the knowledge and tools necessary to effectively support individuals with dyslexia.

This course will provide participants with a deep understanding of dyslexia, covering topics such as early identification, intervention strategies, and the development of inclusive teaching practices. By equipping participants with these essential skills, we aim to foster a more supportive learning environment that caters to the diverse needs of all students.

Dyslexia Organisation, Kenya, established in 2010 and registered under the NGO Board of Kenya, is the leading non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness about dyslexia. DOK is committed to dispelling misconceptions, providing valuable resources, and offering support to individuals with dyslexia and other invisible learning difficulties. Through their tireless efforts, DOK strives to create a more inclusive educational landscape and a society that recognizes and celebrates neurodiversity. This collaboration with Mount Kenya University underscores our shared vision for a more equitable education system.

As Mount Kenya University continues to strive to be a Global Hub of Excellence in Education, Research and Innovation, we are proud to pioneer this initiative. This partnership represents a significant step towards a more inclusive future in education, where every learner’s unique needs are understood and supported. We invite educators, parents, and professionals to join us in this transformative journey, as we work together to build a brighter, more inclusive future for all. The first cohort of this course will commence in September and graduate in December 2024, receiving a certificate jointly issued by Mount Kenya University and Dyslexia Organisation, Kenya.  This certification will equip the participants with tools to make a lasting, positive impact on the lives of learners and contribute to a more inclusive society.
