Mount Kenya University  took bold step in environmental conservation. The Minister for Forestry and Wildlife, Dr Noah Wekesa launched a  tree planting exercise in a ceremony that saw over 2000 seedlings planted by students and staff on the university grounds in Thika, off Garissa road.

"It is the responsibility of this generation to conserve the environment for posterity by increasing the forest cover to 10% or more" - Dr. Noah Wekesa

The university management set aside May 30^th as the institution’s environment day that will be marked on an annual basis. The university congregation will be congregating to celebrate the environment by planting trees and talking about the environment.

We consider deforestation caused either by natural means or human activities as one of the major threats to environmental conservation in Kenya.

The adverse effects of deforestation can only be reversed by planting enough trees across the country. The university community hopes that trees we planted will in future create a micro-climate that will have clean air, regular rainfall patterns and percolation of water in Thika region.
