Programme rationale
The Msc.HM programme is aimed at is producing high caliber graduates who can consolidate the theory and practice of Hospitality management within the public sector, the private sector and the non-governmental sector through a sensitive multi-disciplinary programme characterized by a dynamic mode of delivery and a good blend of theory and practical experience in content and design.

Justification for the Need of the Programme
The Hospitality management offers a multi-disciplinary course of study leading to the Master of Science in Hospitality management (Msc.HM). The Msc.HM degree is primarily designed to prepare individuals for successful leadership roles and management careers in Hospitality and tourism sectors.  The Program has been designed to develop students’ intellectual skills and professional competencies in relation to abilities, interests and industry aspirations.  The expected outcome includes obtaining professional advancement in the hospitality and tourism industry as well academic advancement.

In filling the gaps identified in the training of hospitality and service professional, the Msc.HM programme is designed to recognize that its graduates will; inter alia.

  • To broaden the participants’ world view through an integrated approach to the analysis of the hospitality industry
  • To facilitate individual consolidation of knowledge and skills through application of modern theory and experience to representative case studies and guided seminars.
  • To facilitate each participant’s acquisition and/or development of highly focused specialized knowledge and skills in those areas of critical individual need.
  • Ensure the development of a sustainable industry-university linkage for their mutual benefit.
  • To lay a foundation for the development of a work force at levels of  
  • Public, Private and Non-Governmental Management.
  • To lay a firm foundation for those wanting to pursue doctoral research

Goal of the Programme
The programme is intended to fill the forgoing identified gaps in Msc. hospitality management skills development in the following areas:

  • Front Office operation management
  • Housekeeping and laundry management
  • Food and beverage management
  • Banqueting services
  • Human resource management
  • Service marketing
  • Financial and Accounting management
  • Service quality management
  • Customer relationship management
  • Events management

Expected learning Outcomes of the programme
Upon completion of the prescribed course of study for Msc. hospitality management the graduate will have acquired knowledge, skills and abilities to be able to:

  • Equip students with strong management and operational skills in hospitality business.
  • Have multi-faceted graduates who are multi-skilled and with entrepreneurial abilities in hospitality and tourism industry.
  • Train professionals with strong management orientation for the industry.
  • Equip students with research and innovativeness for the hospitality industry.

Admission requirements for the  programme
The following are the minimum requirements for registration into Msc. hospitality management degree Programme;

i) A Bachelors degree  with a minimum of second class upper division of Mount Kenya University or any other recognized University in the following areas of specialization; Hospitality and Tourism Management, home economics, food science and nutrition, catering and accommodation management.    
 Or:
ii) A Bachelors degree  with a second class lower division with at least 2 years working experience in the following areas of specialization; Hospitality and Tourism Management, home economics, food science and nutrition, catering and accommodation management.
Or:
iii) A Bachelors degree with a pass with at least 5 years working experience    in the following areas of specialization; Hospitality and Tourism Management, home economics, food science and nutrition, catering and accommodation management.
