Varsity to host water summit in October

Mount Kenya University, in conjunction with the County Government of Turkana, Government of Kenya and UNESCO, will hold a water summit in October. The summit to be held in Lodwar, Turkana County will deliberate on groundwater management. The theme of the summit will be Water for socio-economic development. Nation Media Group is the media sponsor.

Turkana County is almost entirely arid and semi arid. Mount Kenya University has a Campus in Lodwar.
The summit will bring together government, industry, non-governmental, and universities to share and discuss cooperative and sustainable water management strategies.

Summit participants will produce a working document of policy recommendations that address sustainable development of underground water resource. This working document will be shared with various stakeholders to inform policy and decision-making.
Objectives:

  1. To assemble key players to deliberate on sustainable groundwater management in Turkana County
  2. Come up with strategies for local community involvement in the exploitation and management of water resources.
  3. Propose coping strategies in the face of ground water discovery in the County
  4. To make policy recommendations that would guide sustainable ground water management
  5. To identify research gaps in groundwater management
