Introduction to the Course

The course aims at providing trainees with knowledge and skills in biological processes and their applications.  The course will make the trainees aware of the interrelationship between organisms in nature and the modern manipulation of micro-organisms in the developing industrial world. The practical work will help the trainees to develop confidence and skills in the use of biological techniques and tools.  In addition of the course will impart general knowledge and entrepreneurial awareness to enable the trainees contribute positively to the society.

General Aims and Objectives of the Course

By the end of this course, the trainee should be able to:

  • Understand the general ecological interrelationship of the organisms.
  • Understand the physiological processes of the living organisms.
  • Understand plants and animals in terms of their breeding, care, diseases infecting them and their economic implications.
  • Use biological tools correctly in biological techniques.
  • Observe safety measures in biological laboratory
  • Prepare accurate laboratory reports
  • Supervise laboratory work.
  • Apply the acquired knowledge and skills in performing various biological techniques.

Course Admission Criteria

For admission to this course, the trainee should have any of these minimum requirements:

  • A pass in a relevant craft course
  • Passed Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (K.C.S.E) with a minimum grade of C- in each of the following subjects: English, Mathematics, and Biology, Biological Science, Chemistry or Physical Science.
  • Any other equivalent qualification recognized by the University Senate

Acceptance of trainees into training rests in the University's governing Council (Senate)

  • Plant husbandry and Entomology
  • Laboratory Practice and Management
  • Practical Examinations


Year Three


Stage Three (3rd Year)

  • Taxonomy, Ecology and soil study
  • Museum, Herbarium, Aquarium and Virarium
  • Microbiology, Parasitology and Physiology
  • Biochemistry, Anatomy and Physiology
  • Animal husbandry, Pharmacology
  • Laboratory Practice and Management
  • Project




Award of Certificate

A candidate who satisfy the Board of examiners in all the examinations and other course requirement shall, on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners be awarded a Diploma Certificate in Applied Biology.
