Introduction to the Course

The Diploma in Analytical Chemistry is aimed at providing the trainee with knowledge and skills in Analytical Chemistry. The trainees will utilize the skills acquired in analytical, industrial and research laboratories or be self-employed.  In addition, the course will impart general knowledge and entrepreneurial awareness to enable the trainees contribute positively in the society.

Rationale

The Diploma in Analytical Chemistry trainee is expected to work in industry i.e. analytical laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, Tea research laboratories, colleges, University laboratories, and other research laboratories.

Aims and Objectives of the Course

By the end of this course, the trainee should be able to:

  • Comprehend the relevant physical, inorganic and organic chemistry principle for use in analytical chemistry.
  • Apply different techniques for chemical and biochemical analysis.
  • Use appropriate instruments to analyze and identify a given chemical substance.
  • Observe safety measures in a chemical laboratory
  • Supervise laboratory work
  • Prepare accurate laboratory reports.

Course Admission Criteria

Trainees entering this course should have any of the following minimum requirements:

  • A pass in a relevant craft course or
  • A pass in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (K.C.S.E) with a minimum overall aggregate of C- and in addition a minimum grade of C- in each of the following subjects:
  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Chemistry or physical science or
  • An approved equivalent qualification

Duration of the Course

This course is designed to have duration of 2970 hours.  The course is organized in three stages.  Each stage has 990 hours

The pattern of attendance is left to the discretion of the institution.

Award of Certificate

A candidate who satisfy the Board of examiners in all the examinations and other course requirement shall, on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners be awarded a Diploma Certificate in Analytical Chemistry.
