Diploma in Science Laboratory Technology
Introduction
The Diploma in Science Laboratory Technology is intended to equip the trainee with knowledge and operative skills necessary to work in analytical, industrial, medical and research laboratories. In addition, the course will impart general knowledge and entrepreneurial awareness to enable the trainee contributes positively to the society.
Rationale
The Diploma in Science Laboratory Technology trainee is expected to work in Science laboratories in colleges, schools, universities, industrial laboratories i.e. KCC, KMC, Research laboratories i.e. KARI and other research laboratories.
Aims and Objectives of the Course
By the end of this course, the trainee should be able to:
- Understand the principle underlying laboratory technique in relation to all science laboratory, engineering, medical and pharmaceutical and chemistry laboratories.
- Use appropriate instruments to analyze and identify given samples
- Maintain laboratory equipments and system in serviceable condition.
- Supervise and design laboratory work
- Modify existing system to improve efficient
- Prepare accurate laboratory work
- Observe safety measures in laboratories, understand principle underlying laboratory technique in science laboratory.
- Set up and operate laboratory apparatus and equipment
- Carry out given tasks and obtain accurate results
- Use appropriate equipment and materials for a given task
- Observe safety in the science laboratory with respect to equipment and personnel.
- Organize data and experimental results for easy interpretation
Course Admission Criteria
Trainees entering this course should have any of the following minimum requirements:
- A pass in a relevant craft course or
- Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (K.C.S.E) with a minimum overall aggregate of C-
- Equivalent qualification
Duration of the Course
This course is designed to have duration of 2970 hours out of which 2310 hours will be effectively spent in the institution while 66 hours will be spent on industrial attachment.

Award of Certificate
A candidate who satisfy the Board of examiners in all the examinations and other course requirement shall, on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners be awarded a Diploma Certificate in Science Laboratory Technology
