Diploma in Community Health and HIV/AIDS Management
Introduction The Diploma in Community Health and HIV/AIDS Management aims at producing a health worker who is capable of addressing health issues on a bottom up approach i.e. from community to global perspective and critically analyze the related health problems with a view of proposing possible solutions.
The need to develop manpower in this discipline has been necessitated by the fast increasing health problem resulting from on-going processes like urbanization and HIV/AIDS which is coupled by the era of emerging and re-emerging infections. For the country to cope with these community health practitioners who will be able to tackle from grass roots are needed.
This curriculum has been prepared in accordance to the WHO target for ensuring cheap, affordable quality and easily accessible health services for all developing countries where a high percentage of population live below the poverty live i.e. they earn less than one dollar per day and thus need for the motto ‘prevention is better than cure.
General Objectives By the end of the course, the trainee should be able to:
- Participate in the management of community health and HIV/AIDS projects.
- Appreciate the role of community organization in community health and HIV/AIDS management.
- Promote ethical practices and integrate gender in the community development.
- Appreciate the role of communication in the community.
- Appreciate the importance of self-entrepreneurial skills in national development.
Goals of The Programme
- To provide increased training opportunities to enable the trainee to self-supporting
- To provide practical skills and attitudes which will lead to income generating activities in the urban and rural areas through self-employment or wage employment
- To provide practical education and training skills which are responsive and relevant to Kenya's agricultural, industrial, commercial and economic needs
- To encourage self-employment and at the same time producing skilled technicians and technologists for both formal and informal sectors.
Admission Requirements
- Be a holder of K.S.C.E. (or equivalent examination) certificate with a minimum aggregate of C and must have C- in Mathematics, Physics or Physical Science, Chemistry and English.
- A pass in certificate in Community Health
- A holder of any other qualification accepted by the University Senate as an equivalent qualification
Programme Structure and Duration
- The Diploma in Community Health shall be offered over a minimum of six terms or two academic years.
- A candidate must complete a minimum of 360 hours of attachment in a hospital or any other relevant institution.
