Diploma in Clinical Medicine & Surgery

Introduction

The Course for the training of clinical officers has been recognised and executed by the Kenyan Government since 1928. Clinical officers form a cadre of health workers that provides quality health care services in Kenya. Clinical officers have played an important role in the health care system by being first among others to come in to contact with patients at health delivery points. They manage primary health care facilities and provide health education to the communities where they work. Clinical officers also form an integral part of the teaching team of health care professionals.

RATIONALE
The high incidence and prevalence of preventable diseases and emergence of new diseases calls for new strategies and approaches to health care delivery. This can be attained through a number of avenues with the most notable one being improving the standards of training for clinical officers who form an integral part of the primary health care system in Kenya. Availability of highly skilled and updated clinical officers and provision of adequate resources would provide Kenyans with the much-needed quality, timely, accessible and affordable health care services. This curriculum shall therefore prepare the Clinical Officers for employment in public, private, NGO and selfemployment. The training forms strong foundation for both academic and professional development of this cadre locally and internationally.

VISION
The Clinical Medicine program aims to be the centre of excellence in the area of training, knowledgeable and proficient clinical officers in the delivery of quality health
