Lodwar Campus

“Bubbling with oil wealth ”
Lodwar was, until a few years ago, a lonely colonial outpost where bored missionaries went to sink wells and locals overheard about a distant country called “Kenya”. A two-room relic at the outskirts of the town is a reminder of the endurance Kenya’s first President Jomo Kenyatta faced at the hands of colonialists.

He was imprisoned here in 1959. Fast forward to 2014 and Lodwar is not just a tourism site. It brims with investment opportunities and bubbles with oil. The MKU campus was established in 2010, then as part of the university’s Corporate Social Responsibility. The idea was to take affordable higher education to people in marginalised areas.
It was ambition 685 kilometres away. Now, over 2,000 locals from this hitherto marginalised area have taken up

university courses at the only Chartered institution of higher learning in the vast Turkana County.
