Department of Public Health

Public Health is an exciting and growing field of study. It is a diverse and dynamic field. This field challenges its professionals to confront complex, emerging and re-emerging health issues. The areas of concern include control and prevention of infectious diseases; reducing environmental hazards, improving accessibility of health care provision, food safety and quality assurance.
Other key areas are research; narcotics and substance abuse control and prevention; violence and injury management and surveillance; disaster management and preparedness; international health; health education and advocacy among others
Public health is a field geared towards serving the public in local, national and international levels. Public health professionals not only protect the public’s health today but also in the future. The field of public health offers great personal fulfillment since working towards improving people’s health and well-being is a rewarding day’s work.

Mount Kenya University Department of Public Health currently boasts of a student number of over 1,500 in the following campuses: Main Campus Thika, Mombasa, Nairobi, Nakuru, Eldoret, Kakamega, Lodwar and Kigali Rwanda campuses

Bachelor of Science in
Environmental Health     

KCSE average grade of C+ or its equivalent and C+ in Mathematics/ Physics; Chemistry/Physical Sciences; Biology/Biological Sciences; Kiswahili/ English.

Or

A diploma in a relevant area with at least C plain in KCSE. 
8 semesters Ksh. 65,000 per semester.

Diploma in Environmental
Health      

KCSE C (plain) and C in English and Biology, C in either two of the follow- ing Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry

Or

A certificate in Environmental Health/ Public Health from an institution recognised by Mount Kenya University Senate with at least mean grade C- in KCSE
6 Trimesters Ksh.29,550 per trimester
Diploma in Community Health and HIV/AIDS Management        KCSE certificate with a minimum of grade C or equivalent qualification recognized by University Senate plus C- in English/Kiswahili; Mathematics/ Physics; Biology and Chemistry. 6 trimesters Ksh.29,550 per trimester
Certificate in Community Health and HIV/AIDS Management       KCSE certificate with a minimum of grade C- with at least D+ in English/ Kiswahili, Mathematics/Physics, Biology/Chemistry 3 Trimesters Ksh.24,550 per trimester
