Bachelor of Science in Travel and Tourism Management

Course Rationale
The Bachelors of Science in Travel and Tourism Management (BSc.TTM)  is centered on Tourism and Travel and identifies tourism as a significant element that makes momentous contribution to the the world. Additionally, definite aspects recognizes tourism as making remarkable contribution to the economies of the world. This contribution of tourism has been supported by various policies at both the local and international levels, for example, by the vision 2030 and millennium development goals (MDGs). This global spread of tourism in industrialized ,developing  and developed states has produced ‎economic and employment benefits in many related sectors - from construction to ‎agriculture or telecommunications.‎

Why study the programme
The programme is intended to fill the forgoing identified gaps in tourism skills development in the following areas:

  1. Travel agency management
  2. Tour operations practices
  3. Tour guiding techniques
  4. Eco-tourism
  5. Tourism marketing
  6. Cultural heritage tourism management
  7. Sports tourism management
  8. Human resource management
  9. Service marketing
  10. Financial and Accounting management
  11. Service quality management
  12. Entreprenuership
  13. Events management

The course incorporates technology to meet the demands of the current job market and anticipated continued influence of electronic trade in conducting business in modern times.
Course Units of humanities like communication skills, Essential of Development, Business ethics and Laws are to address the issues of decision making as well as meet the 8.4.4 aspects in Kenya.

Target Groups
In filling the gaps identified in the training of tourism professionals, the BSc.TTM programme is designed to recognize that its graduates will :
a)  Have strong tourism orientation and management knowledge in order to provide management knowledge, skills and abilities that will :

  1. Enhance performance through effective training of key competencies and skills  
  2. Enable successful performance of manpower systems in hospitality organizations
  3. Integrate all hospitality organization systems
  4. Strategize service organization of levels and functions System.

b)     Exhibit strong ethical principles, good interpersonal communication values and virtues through

  1. Appropriate tourism managers codes of conduct
  2. Effective and efficient trained team work
  3. Excellent work assignment and demonstration
  4. Being practically inquisitive and objective in achievements.

c)    Have strong analytic and critical thinking, knowledge, skills and abilities to

  1. Solve management problems in tourism organizations
  2. Apply perspective and prospective tourism and management concepts and information
  3. Conceptualize and systemize people, principles, procedures, and data in tourism enterprises

d)    Design and implement tourism management solutions that enhance organizational performance

  1. Acquiring, processing, designing and storing tourism information
  2. Modeling tourism organizational processes, defining and managing them.
  3. Helping staff in units, sections and departments to attain their goals in tourism organization.

Programme Objectives
The programme is tailored to provide opportunities to those individuals interested in developing careers in Travel and Tourism . The programme is designed to enable students to define, investigate, analyse, evaluate and respond to tactical and strategic issues of concern to tourism and hospitality in a variety of practical contexts within local and international  Tourism.

Entry Requirements
The entry requirements set out below must be regarded as minimum requirements which in no way directly entitles an applicant to a place in the university. The following requirements must be fulfilled: -

  1. A Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education with an average grade C+ (C Plus) or its equivalent passed from at least eight subjects as one sitting drawn from subject clusters as stipulated by the Kenya National Examinations Council.
  2. One of the following combinations of passes in the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education or Advanced Certificate Level of the General Certificate of Education.
    1.  Two Principals or Advanced Level passes of at least Grade C obtained at the same sitting.
    2. Two principals or Advanced Level passes obtained at different sittings provided that both passes are of Grade C or higher. OR
  3. Applicants who have not taken any of the above examinations must produce acceptable documentary evidence of having passed an examination of equivalent standards by a signed statement of attainment from the Head of the last school or College attended or from the respective education authority.
  4. Additional entry requirements as may be specified by respective faculties, schools or departments

Exemptions and credit transfers
Credit Transfer

  • A maximum of 15 units can be transferred for relevant units covered at degree or diploma level whose attainment is grade B and above.
  • Evidence supporting the application should include certified academic transcripts, certificates and a letter from the relevant registrar or authority
  • Application for credit transfer will not be allowed three (3) weeks after the start of the semester / trimester unless granted permission by the University Senate .
  • The University reserves the right to administer an appropriate test, through the relevant Department in order to determine whether exemption should be granted.

Exemption
The following conditions should be met in seeking an exemption for a particular subject:

  • The applicant shall pay a non-refundable credit transfer/exemption fee as determined by the School Board and approved by the Senate.
  • A formal application on a prescribed form should be lodged with the Dean of School.
  • The application should include justification and documentary support for the exemption to be considered.
  • The applicant must have passed the final examinations for the year in which the subject to be exempted was examined.
  • The School Board may require the applicant to sit an exemption examination.
  • No exemption shall be granted for professional or clinical subjects.
